The Solid Refuge: Atlas Cedarwood
Atlas cedarwood essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of Cedrus atlantica, the cedar of the Atlas Mountains in North Africa. It has a woody, dry and slightly balsamic profile, rich in himachalenes and atlantones, and at home it is used to bring structure and calm to a space.
The journey changes temperature. We leave behind the humid, dark density of Papua New Guinea and cross half the world in search of solid ground, altitude and open sky.
We arrive in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. Here the light is hard and the air is dry, and on the peaks winter brings snow. The botany of Atlas Cedar
Cedrus atlantica grows on the slopes of the Atlas, between Morocco and Algeria, in demanding conditions of altitude, drought and cold. Its wood is dry, compact and rich in oils that protect it from weather and pests. It is a born survivor.
Our extract is steam distilled from that wood and captures its biological resilience. The olfactory profile is unmistakably woody, with a warm, sunlit quality that comes from its himachalenes and atlantones.
While other cedars can be overly smoky, Atlas cedar opens clean, almost sweet and balsamic, and evolves into a dry, robust base. It smells of fine carpentry, of a forest warmed by the afternoon sun, and of absolute order. It is the scent of stability.
Atlas cedar or Australian cedar?
For a time we called this oil Australian cedar, and the reason lies in the supply chain. Our supplier works with Cedrus atlantica wood from the forests of North Africa and lists Australia as the country where it is processed. The species, and with it the scent, is Atlas cedar.
The distinction matters because the name Australian cedar usually refers to other trees, such as Australian red cedar (Toona ciliata), a cabinetmaking timber that does not belong to the true cedar genus. Nor should it be confused with Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara), its closest relative, or with so-called Virginia cedar, which is actually a juniper. When choosing a cedarwood oil, the botanical name on the label is the only thing that tells you which tree is inside the bottle.
How to use Atlas cedarwood oil at home
In interior design, wood brings structural warmth. In olfactory design, cedarwood oil plays the same role, because it "builds" the space and dissolves the feeling of fragility. It brings the certainty that the walls hold you.
