Soy Wax vs Paraffin Wax
Paraffin has no scent. The smell you perceive when you light a supermarket candle comes from the synthetic fragrance mixed into the wax, not from the burning material. What you're burning is a direct derivative of the petroleum refining process.
That's what's inside most mass-market candles. And it's the starting point for understanding why a candle's material matters as much as the scent it carries.
Where paraffin comes from
Paraffin is the result of refining crude oil. The same industrial process that produces fuels and lubricants generates, as a byproduct, this low-cost, readily available wax that the candle industry widely adopted throughout the 20th century.
Its advantage is economic and logistical: it's cheap, stable, easy to mold, and readily accepts synthetic fragrance. Its composition is chemical: when burned, it releases volatile organic compounds including toluene and benzene, present in the combustion of any petroleum derivative.
In an open, well-ventilated space, exposure is minimal. In an enclosed space, with the candle burning for two or three hours, the accumulation changes the equation.
What happens when you burn paraffin in an enclosed space
The respiratory system registers what the nose doesn't always detect. The volatile organic compounds released by paraffin combustion have no particular smell. They accumulate silently in the air.
Visible soot on the rim of the container or on the wall behind the candle is the most obvious sign. But the chemistry that occurs before that is visible matters more than the stain.
A vegetable wax candle burns at a lower temperature. It produces significantly less soot. And its combustion, being based on a botanical material, releases a different compound profile than a petroleum derivative.
Why soy wax changes the equation
Soy wax is, in essence, a canvas. It comes from the hydrogenation of soybean oil, has a low melting point, and a texture that retains essential oil uniformly throughout the mass.
That retention changes how the aroma is expressed. In a paraffin candle, the synthetic fragrance tends to release intensely upon lighting and then quickly fade. In a soy wax candle with single-origin essential oils, the aroma evolves: the top notes open first, the heart settles in over time, and the base lingers when the flame is no longer there.
Soy wax allows the olfactory pyramid to function as it was designed.
The "natural" trap
The term "vegetable wax" on a label can mean many things. A blend with 10% coconut wax and 90% paraffin can legally be called a "wax blend" in certain markets. "Premium waxes" is often paraffin with a smaller percentage of vegetable wax that justifies the price without changing the base material.
The right questions to ask when reading a candle label:
- What is the base material and what percentage is it?
- Does the scent come from essential oils or synthetic fragrance?
- Does the brand publish the origin of its raw materials?
- Does the container show soot after several burns?
A brand that uses 100% vegetable wax with traceable essential oils has reasons to state it precisely. Vagueness on the label usually indicates something.
